ECF Communiqué on the Death of Catherine Millot

Catherine Millot died on 24 August 2026. The news was given by the École de la Cause freudienne (ECF) in a communiqué of 31 August, signed by Jacques-Alain Miller.

Millot was an academic who became a psychoanalyst and then a writer. As Lacan’s last companion, she belonged to the École freudienne de Paris and later, for nearly ten years, to the ECF. According to the communiqué, in later years she was widely respected in psychiatric circles.

Miller describes her as someone who shunned colloquia and congresses, “everything that makes a mass”, and devoted herself to practice, writing and friendship. Of her books he names O Solitude and La Vie avec Lacan, which he says “will remain an indelible testimony”. In a postscript he adds that she was a very dear friend to him, and offers his condolences to Rachel, her last love.
